OCR B (MEI) Maths GCSE (J519):
Course structure and content
There are two papers, modular (B291) and terminal (B293). Each has a
section A (non-calculator) and B (calculator). Both can be taken at the
end of the course, or the modular paper can be taken earlier.
The options are:
- A two-year course with full assessment at the end.
- A two-year course with B291 or B293 taken in June of the first year
or January of the second year.
- A one-year course with full assessment at the end.
- A one-year course with B291 or B293 taken in January.
- A one-and-a-half-year course with B291 or B293 taken in June and B292
or B294 taken the following January.
Details of the papers:
B291 Foundation – Modular paper 1.5 hours 40%
B292 Foundation – Terminal paper 2 hours 60%
B293 Higher – Modular paper 1.5 hours 40%
B294 Higher – Terminal paper 2 hours 60%
I wouldn't call this a modular course - its structure is similar to linear
syllabuses and there is little, if any, difference in content between
this specification and the others. The only difference is that there is
flexibility in when the papers are taken. OCR say that, 'Any appropriate
up-to-date text for GCSE Mathematics will be suitable for use with this
specification so centres will not be disadvantaged if they change from
other specifications.'
